ROI for SEO: Why experience and longevity matters

16 February 2022 Blog Posts

Unlike other forms of marketing, SEO isn’t a quick-fix or a one-time thing. It can take months to see results. SEO is a long-term, constantly evolving process that every website needs to survive, and especially to thrive.

For SEO, ROI is dependent on your provider’s experience and the length of time given to the project. Let’s learn about how Megantic can help you with your SEO on your eCommerce site.

What Is ROI?

ROI, or return on investment, is used to measure and evaluate the efficiency or profitability of a task.

To calculate ROI, the return (such as direct profits, conversion rate, clicks, etc) of a task is divided by the cost. This is shown as a percentage or as a ratio.

For example:

Your most recent email campaign led to 50 customers purchasing from your website with an average cart size of $70. In total, you gained an additional $3500 in gross sales from the email campaign. The time taken for you to create the email campaign works out to be $300 in time and materials.

The return is $3500.

The cost is $300.

Shown as a ratio: $3500 ÷ $300 = 11.67 or 11.67:1.

Shown as a percentage: $3500 ÷ $300 x 100 = 1167%.

What Is SEO?

SEO, or search engine optimisation, is what we do here at Megantic. Put simply, SEO is the process of restructuring websites and site content to make the website more appealing to search engines (such as Google). Google will then place your website higher in search results, leading to increased website traffic, and hence increased conversions, sales and revenue.

There are three different types of SEO:

  • On-page SEO,
  • Off-page SEO, and
  • Technical SEO.

Here at Megantic, we focus on technical SEO. To learn more about the different types of SEO, read our blog on The 3 Types of SEO You Need To Know.

How we understand ROI in SEO at Megantic

At Megantic, we use a three-stage strategy to increase our client’s website SEO.

Stage 1: Data-driven research.

Stage 2: Implementation.

Stage 3: Ongoing growth and protection.

To learn more about our three-stage strategy, read our page on Megantic’s Three-Stage Strategy.

The amount we charge for our monthly retainers in Stage 3 is dependent on each client’s individual needs, goals and budgets. As with all our work, it is personally tailored for each business. A higher monthly retainer gives us more hours to work on your website, meaning more SEO-optimised web pages and URLs, thus more selling pages to target new customers and generate new revenue opportunities.

We provide each client with a ROI calculation to breakeven, or an “ROI breakeven analysis”, so we are not a burden on your business. We want to become an integral part of your team, and we believe that we can do that. Check out OCAM Industries, Tentworld and The Block Shop, three clients we have been working closely with for nearly five years!

We use the ROI breakeven analysis to demonstrate how high we need to increase your sales to justify our monthly retainer cost. After that, it’s all growth and profits.

What we do for SEO at Megantic

Surely you’ve seen, heard from or been contacted by an SEO agency or “expert” claiming that they will put you on the first page of Google. That you will see “huge increases in profits within weeks”. They typically do this by ranking your site for obscure keywords and keyphrases.

At Megantic, we focus on getting your site to rank highly for commercial keywords. This type of keyword or keyphrase has a high number of monthly searches and a high buying intent. We also focus on keywords that are within a niche, but aren’t so niche that there aren’t many searches.

Why would you want to rank highly for “antique green floral chair” (an obscure keyword) when you could rank for “antique chairs” (a commercial keyword)?

Explanation:

The first keyword string (“antique green floral chair”) has so few monthly searches, that a monthly average search volume cannot be calculated. This means that although this is an easy keyword to rank for, there won’t be many individuals searching for and purchasing your product. However “antique chairs” has 720 monthly searches, making it harder to rank highly, but much more likely that someone will find your products and purchase them.

At Megantic, we typically begin seeing results at the three month stage. This is after we have completed our extensive Research Stage, and during our Implementation Stage.

We constantly review the success of your progress, and account for external factors, such as Google Search Algorithm updates.

Megantic only works with clients who we are sure we can help

We will never sign on a new client unless we are positive that we can help them improve.

We look at the data of your website, show you our client’s average ROIs, and show you our client’s average revenue increases. Then, we show you what we have been able to do in the past and what we estimate (based on evidence) that we can do for your website.

Megantic does not have lock in contracts, only monthly retainers that can be paused at any time. We know it is integral to consistently be honest, transparent and ethical with all our clients.
