Introduction

Repco is Australia’s largest auto parts and car accessories retailer with over 100 years experience stocking replacement car parts, car batteries, engine oil, air filters and much more. They have over 320 stores country-wide and now also offer a large range of in-person car servicing options. Their online store is a huge revenue driver, stocking over 500,000 products for sale.

Insight

As such an iconic Australian brand, they have an extremely high level of branded traffic (450K/month) but were missing the opportunity to drive new and incremental web traffic via non-branded search terms in the organic channel.

Megantic began working with Repco in April 2022 with the aim of boosting their Organic channel. Although the automotive industry is very competitive with many big players and specialist businesses, it is an industry that we have extensive experience in.

Our main objectives to improve Repco’s SEO were:

  • Expand the number of selling pages.
  • Create structured product categories by cleaning URLs for product categories.
  • Map the product categories URLs for an expansion to their existing “Make, Model, Series” filter for car types.

 

Our Approach

Working with Repco, we followed our specialised three-stage strategy. The strategy begins with full market research into their target market and their typical searching behaviour, then comes the implementation of the ideal site structure based on this data. Lastly is the on-going growth and protection of their new organic positions.

 

For this campaign, we focused on four key verticals:
  • Parts & Service
  • 4×4 Adventure
  • Oils & Fluids
  • Globes, Batteries & Electrical
Focusing on only these verticals allowed us to improve the biggest money makers for Repco. This provided the most results for their investment. We worked with multiple departments and stakeholders helping their relevant teams buy into the strategy and training of the execution of naming conventions.

 

Specifically, the strategy we implemented for Repco’s SEO included:
  • Researching their organic market opportunities and creating a new website architecture based on this data.
  • Segmenting URLs to minimise clicks to purchase (how many times a user needs to visit a new page/click until they can check out).
  • Mapping and executing hundreds of 301 “Moved Permanently” error codes.
  • Optimising robots.txt, meta-robots, x-robots-tags and canonical tags in accordance with Google best practices.
  • Full site Metadata optimisation based on high transactional intent keywords.

Year on Year Results

In only one year (April 2022 to April 2023), we have seen huge growth with Repco. As they are a very large company and already ranked for so many keywords, seeing a growth of over 20% for first page rankings is amazing to see.
